How to price handmade soap on Etsy

One bar of soap costs little to make but a lot to post. The fix is almost always bundles.

Cost one bar, not one batch

Divide your batch cost by the number of bars. An example bar might use $1.40 of oils and butters, $0.40 of fragrance and $0.20 for the wrap and label: $2.00 in materials. A box and padding add about $0.60, and cutting, curing and wrapping take about 8 minutes of your time per bar.

The single-bar problem

One bar: $9 + $5.95 shipping
Buyer pays$14.95
Listing fee−$0.20
Transaction 6.5%−$0.97
Processing 3% + $0.25−$0.70
Platform fees−$1.87
Your costs−$10.47
You keep$2.61 (17.5%)

You keep $2.61. The postage label costs more than the soap, and Etsy's fixed fees apply to every order however small. To keep 30% on a single bar you'd need to charge $12.09 plus shipping.

A 3-bar bundle changes everything

3 bars: $30, free shipping
Buyer pays$30.00
Listing fee−$0.20
Transaction 6.5%−$1.95
Processing 3% + $0.25−$1.15
Platform fees−$3.30
Your costs−$20.10
You keep$6.60 (22.0%)

Three bars share one box, one label and one set of fixed fees. You keep $6.60, or 22.0%, and the free-shipping price is easier for buyers to say yes to.

  • Lead with sets: a trio, a gift box, a "pick any 3".
  • Keep single bars as a cheaper entry point, priced so they still cover postage.

Questions sellers ask

How much should I charge for a bar of handmade soap?

Many sellers charge $7 to $12 a bar. Check that the price covers your materials, packaging, postage, time and Etsy's fees, because shipping often costs more than the bar.

Should I sell soap in bundles?

Usually yes. Bundles share one label and one set of fixed fees, so they're far more profitable per bar.
