Etsy fees in Canada: what Canadian sellers actually pay
Canadian sellers pay the same core fees as US sellers, plus a regulatory fee and, if you list in US dollars, a currency conversion fee. Here is every one with a worked example.
The fees, in Canadian dollars
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | US$0.20 (about CA$0.27) | Each listing, renewal and sale |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item price plus shipping |
| Payment processing | 3% + CA$0.25 | Orders from Canada and the US |
| Payment processing | 4% + CA$0.25 | Orders from everywhere else |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.5% | Item price plus shipping |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Only if your listing currency isn't CAD |
The listing fee is set in US dollars, so its Canadian price moves a little with the exchange rate.
Worked example: a CA$40 item with CA$12 shipping
Say you sell a ceramic mug for CA$40 and charge CA$12 shipping. Materials cost CA$9, packaging CA$2, the shipping label CA$11, and it takes 30 minutes at CA$22 an hour.
Etsy's fees come to CA$5.72, or 11.0% of what the buyer pays. To keep 30% of every order as profit, you would need to list this mug at CA$43.87.
Two fees Canadian sellers miss
- International buyers cost more. Ship the same mug to the UK and processing rises to 4%, which takes your profit from CA$13.28 to CA$12.76.
- Listing in US dollars adds 2.5%. If your shop currency is USD but your bank account is in Canada, Etsy converts every sale. On this order that drops your profit to CA$11.98. Listing in CAD avoids it.
