How to price digital downloads on Etsy
Digital products have no materials or shipping, so almost everything after fees is profit. But Etsy's fixed fees hit low prices hard.
The fixed-fee problem
Every sale pays a $0.20 listing fee (the listing renews when it sells) and $0.25 in payment processing, no matter the price. On a cheap printable, that fixed $0.45 is a big slice.
| Price | Etsy fees | Fees as % of price | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3.00 | $0.73 | 24.5% | $2.27 |
| $8.00 | $1.21 | 15.1% | $6.79 |
| $15.00 | $1.88 | 12.5% | $13.12 |
At $3, Etsy keeps nearly a quarter of the sale. At $15, it keeps about an eighth.
How to price higher without losing sales
- Bundle. Sell a set of 10 wall-art prints instead of one, or a full planner instead of a single page.
- Add editable versions. Editable templates (for Canva and similar tools) are worth more to buyers than flat files.
- Use tiers. Offer a basic version and a premium version in the same shop. Many buyers pick the middle option.
Count your creation time, once
A digital product takes time to make once, then sells again and again. If a planner took 20 hours at $25 an hour, that's $500 of work. At $8 a sale you'd need about 74 sales to pay yourself back, and at $15 about 39.
