How to price crochet and knitting on Etsy

Yarn is cheap. Hours aren't. Most crocheters undercharge because the honest price looks scary.

A $45 plush, honestly costed

Take a crochet bunny: $9 of yarn and stuffing, $1 of packaging, a $5.50 label, and 2.5 hours of work.

Paying yourself $20 an hour
Buyer pays$45.00
Listing fee−$0.20
Transaction 6.5%−$2.92
Processing 3% + $0.25−$1.60
Platform fees−$4.72
Your costs−$65.50
You keep−$25.23 (-56.1%)

At $20 an hour, a $45 sale loses $25.23. Covering everything plus a 30% margin would mean charging $109.01.

Four ways to make it work

  • Be honest about your hourly rate. At $12 an hour, the same sale leaves −$5.23. Many makers start lower and raise prices as reviews come in.
  • Get faster. At 90 minutes and $15 an hour you keep $2.27. Simpler patterns and batching parts make a big difference.
  • Price premium items like premium items. Custom and heirloom pieces can carry $80–$150 prices when the photos and story justify it.
  • Sell the pattern too. A PDF pattern takes your time once and sells again and again with almost no costs.
