Etsy vs Amazon Handmade: which pays makers more?

Amazon Handmade has one simple fee: 15%. Etsy has several smaller ones. Here's how they compare on the same order.

A $28 item with $5.95 shipping and the same costs on each platform.

Etsy leaves you $1.42 more on this sale. Amazon's 15% referral fee applies to the item and the shipping you charge, so it costs more on most orders.

When Etsy's fees catch up

Etsy's Offsite Ads can change the picture. When a sale comes from one, Etsy adds 15%, and that order leaves you $2.63, less than on Amazon. Shops under $10,000 a year can opt out of Offsite Ads.

Other differences that matter

  • Monthly plan: Amazon Handmade requires the $39.99 Professional plan, but waives it after the first month for approved artisans. Etsy has no monthly fee unless you choose Etsy Plus.
  • Getting in: Amazon Handmade requires an application to confirm your items are handmade. Etsy is open to anyone.
  • Buyers: Amazon shoppers often search by product and compare prices. Etsy shoppers more often browse for something unique.
